Frequently Asked Questions

What type of group is the Gun Powder Gals?

Gun Powder Gals is a shooting league is a women’s only shooting group. We meetup several times a month to do a variety of activities. While most of the activities center on firearms we also have non-firearm related meetings.

Currently, we have meet for pistol shooting practice and competition, trap shooting and competition, rifle shooting, archery practice, paint ball, firearm training classes, and a few social events throughout the year.

We have had women’s only IDPA (International Defensive Pistol Association) styled events, and in association with the Sandhills Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation a Women’s Outdoor Event that included firearms, canoeing, and fishing.

We are always looking for new and exciting events, classes, and education opportunities for our members. If you have a suggestion or know of an upcoming event, please let us know!

Gun Powder Gals promote firearm safety and education. The group is made up of women of all ages and levels of experience. Regardless of your experience or comfort level, you’ll find at each event a helpful, comfortable, and safe environment to learn and to practice.

I just joined the Gun Powder Gals, now what?

We are happy to have you! Now the question is what do you want to do? Many women join up, but are frightened to come to their first meeting not knowing what to expect. If they are new to the shooting sports, it can seem intimidating.

First, know that every single meetup we have, there will always be a point person who will welcome you, tell you about the facility, introduce you to the other people, and help you get started. You are not alone!

The Gals in the group are some of the friendliest and nicest you’ll meet. Many of them are just getting started in the shooting sports so they are still learning their way and there are many who have been doing it for years.

The meetups are NOT training class but there will be someone to show you the ropes. If you would like formal training, Candy Sugarman, the Founder can help! She is an NRA Certified Pistol Instructor.

Second, look for all the upcoming events on either Facebook or Meetup. Read the description and the date and if you can come, RSVP. If you don’t have the firearm, then post in the comments. Many of the members have extra equipment and are happy to bring it for others to use. Also, most of the locations have rentals available.

Third, make sure you have the basic equipment, such as eye protection and ear protection. You can buy these most places, such as Wal-Mart for under $20. Most ranges have rentals available. For shooting meetups, you’ll need to bring your own ammo. You can buy this at the range or at a sporting goods store.

Fourth, attend the event! While doing something new can be a bit nerve-wracking, know that we are all here for the same reason, to learn and to practice in a safe and stress-free environment.

Fifth, pay for membership. We have a number of options for membership but you might want to start at our basic level. That is a $5 fee for any event you come to. Please note there is still range fees (and if you rent a gun or equipment you need to pay for that). This fee helps us keep the Gun Powder Gals’ meetup page, website, pays for supplies like targets, posters, stickers, competition prizes, and administrative time to come up and attend events.

Finally, tell a friend! The more ladies we attend, the more fun we all have. When putting together training or social events like the Women’s Outdoor Adventure or Tactical Pistol or fundraising for our charity of choice, the more people we have, the easier it is to get even better events on the board.
